William’s 1st Cosmo Yume Experience

This morning I began my first day here in Toyomi, Agamachi. Waking up in a traditional Japanese chanoma (tatami-floored room) surrounded by the stone sculptures of owls and foxes in Wasaikan was a wonderful way to start the day. I was welcomed into Sato-san and Makiko-san’s home for a delicious breakfast, and Sato-san showed me some of the art he’d painted over the years, including some lovely pictures of his previous pets. Then, we drove up the hill to Sato-san’s studio and broke up firewood to heat the bath water. It was a beautifully sunny morning, and the view of the river and the autumn leaves from the studio was stunning. Later, we returned to the house, where Sato-san showed me the various interesting fruits and vegetables growing in the garden, and I used a chainsaw to cut logs for the stove. After an amazing lunch of handmade soba and tempura (courtesy of Makiko-san), we travelled down to Sato-san’s rice fields and unblocked the drain supplying a small river that flows beside the black rice field, where lots of freshwater fish and shellfish live. It was really interesting to see Sato-san’s wonderful artwork displayed in such a natural setting, surrounding the rice fields. After work was finished, Sato-san drove us back up to the studio and I had an amazingly relaxing natural bath at Tougenoyu. In the evening, we all gathered in Wasaikan for a delicious meal, and celebrated my arrival as well as Sato-san and Makiko-san’s wedding anniversary – the perfect end to a fascinating first day at Cosmo Yume!
