Last month, I received an invitation to
take photos to help promote Aga-machi, a small Japanese countryside area in
Niigata prefecture.
Aga-machi’s town area is relatively
small while the rest comprises of smaller villages on the town’s
outskirts. Here people live side by side with nature, and it is not uncommon to
encounter wildlife such as monkeys, wild boars or even bears.
The four days spent in Aga-machi were
very relaxing. It was not only a chance for me to spend time in the calm
countryside, but it was also a chance for me to enjoy food made from locally
grown ingredients. Niigata prefecture is especially famous for its rice.
Unlike your usual touristy places in
Japan, Aga-machi is much more authentic. There weren’t any specific
photography spots for tourists; it was up to you to explore and find your own
special place. When the rain falls, and mist veils over the mountains,
Aga-machi can look truly mysterious and enchanting.
However, what I found most endearing to
Aga-machi was the kindness of its people. While I can speak some Japanese, I
sometimes struggle to find the right words. But that was never a problem
because people in Aga-machi were always accommodating.
At one point, I was invited into an old
Japanese house. The owner was so kind that she ended up giving me so many
snacks and fruits when I was leaving, so much so that I didn’t have to
stop by a souvenir store before leaving Aga-machi.
Those photos are only parts of my
Aga-machi trip. I hope that you can get an idea of Aga-machi through them.
Maybe one day you will also get a chance to visit Aga-machi.
During my time in Aga-Machi, I stayed at
Wasaikan, a guesthouse in the nearby village of Tsugawa run by Kentaro and his
wife, Makiko. They both moved from Saitama 15 years ago when Kentaro decided to
give up his teaching job at a school to become a full-time sculptor.
Through many years of hard work, Kentaro
became a successful sculptor. His works are on permanent display in Japan as
well as Greece. Recently Kentaro also received an award from the local council
for restoring Tsugawa through his art.
However, the road to success wasn’t easy.
Both Kentaro and Makiko went through a lot of hardship, including battles with
cancer. Years have passed since then. They both have decided to pursue a life
with optimism and healthy diet, eating only fish and their own locally grown
vegetables and rice.
Now Kentaro and Makiko are living a
healthy and happy life with their dog Chiro and cat Mii-chan.
